Will the DVD eventually give way to an even more powerful storage medium capable of holding more information or entertainment on a single disc? That's the aim of the Blu-ray disc, developed by a consortium of companies that includes Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Sony and Panasonic. Its goal is to put high-definition movies, which contain six times the picture information as a televised film, on a single optical disc.
Through refinements in laser technology, the Blu-ray consortium arrived at a disc that can store 25 gigabytes of information per side -- enough to hold the entire sixth season of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" on a single disc....more
